The Challenges of Multiple Generations in the Workplace

If you work with people, you've probably heard of many others. For the first time in history, we have four different generations in our workplace.

This creates an interesting and challenging dilemma for us: How is it possible that we can have very different perspectives and experiences.

Different experts and writers call it by different names and there are different variations, but they are basically the same thing.

Builder – born between 1910 and 1945

Boomer – born between 1946 and 1964

Busters – (also known as Gen X) – were born between 1965 and 1984

Bridgers – (also known as Gen Y) – were born between 1984 and 2002

Each generation brings its own perspectives, experiences, and value systems, and each needs to be understood and celebrated for what is brought to the table.

The challenge clearly comes when what one generation carries is so different from another that no one can understand, let alone its value.

Builders are those around the age of 63 and over, so this is the smallest category at the moment. They are traditionalists who value hard work and dedication, loyalty to the cause and society.

Boomers (commonly called baby boomers) were born in the years following World War II. It is often said that there are two "waves" of boomers and the characteristics of each wave differ to some extent.
