Bed bug infestations are characterized by:
- A pungent odour
- A sickly sweet, moldy shoe smell is a sign of an existing infestation.
Physical evidence is the best way to detect a bedbug infestation. You can see the pesky bug with your naked eyes. The pesky bug is small and wingless, about the same size as an apple seed. It is reddish brown in colour with a flat oval structure.
Unfed, the adult measures 1/4 to 3/8 inches in length. Its upper body is crinkly and has an accordion-like appearance. Its body will expand and become longer after it is fed. The colour of its skin will change to bright red when it is fully nourished.
After eating its meal, the body of an insect becomes flatter and its colour gets darker. The nymph looks just like an adult, except that it is smaller and has a different colour. After it feeds, the newly hatched Nymph becomes darker and translucent.
Eggs are approximately 1/3-inch in length and white in colour. The egg's sticky coating allows them to stick to any surface they are placed on. They are about the same size as a few grains of salt, and are invisible to naked eyes.
