Facilitator training provides operators with the skills they need to succeed at one or more of the following skill levels: basic, developmental, and advanced. Below is an overview of basic, developmental, and advanced support associated with the discipline of moderation.

1) Basic level: This level deals with activities such as information sharing and goal setting. Meeting hosts use basic skills such as time management and specialized skills like technology skills to help groups achieve meeting goals. At a basic level, moderators help their clients solve problems in meetings. Often, the goal of each engagement is achieved in a single session.

2) Development stage: In this stage, the contractor helps the client improve the process instead of satisfying temporary needs. For example, whereas the point of goal setting at the basic level is to set a specific goal, its purpose at the developmental level is to help the client improve the goal-setting process for the future. To this end, real-time feedback and performance training is often offered in multiple sessions.

3) Advanced Level: This level handles situations that add complexity due to various factors, such as personal disagreements within the group, low morale due to company misfortune, difficulty channeling company values into products or services, etc. At this level, the organizer observes meetings that focus on conflict resolution, team-building skills, and implementing vision and values.
